The state of Veracruz ranked seventh nationally for the highest number of intentional homicides in April, according to Marcela Figueroa Franco, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).

The states of Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Morelos, Baja California, Sinaloa, the State of Mexico, Veracruz, and Guerrero accounted for 53 percent of all intentional homicides in the country in April 2026, representing 834 cases out of the 1,565 total across the 32 federal entities.

According to official information presented during the morning press conference on Tuesday, May 12, in April 2026, the states of Chihuahua and Guanajuato each accounted for 8.2 percent of the national total with 129 homicides. Morelos accounts for 7.2 percent of the national total with 112 intentional homicides; Baja California and Sinaloa each account for 6.4 percent with 101 homicides; the State of Mexico accounts for 5.7 percent with 90 intentional homicides; Veracruz accounts for 5.3 percent with 88 homicides; and Guerrero has 84 cases of this crime, representing 5.3 percent of the national total.

The head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System also highlighted that, at the national level, there has been a 40 percent decrease in the average daily number of intentional homicides from October 2024 to April 2026, the period of the current administration of Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

In that regard, she said that this 40 percent reduction is equivalent to 34 fewer intentional homicides per day compared to September 2024, dropping from an average of 86.9 homicides per day to 52.5 in April 2026.

It was also reported that the first four months of 2026—January to April—were the lowest in the last 11 years, registering an average of 51.2 intentional homicides per day, compared to the same period in previous years since 2015.

Given the decrease in intentional homicides nationwide, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo emphasized that, thanks to coordination with the states as part of the National Security Strategy, homicides have decreased. When mentioning some of the states they are working with, she highlighted Veracruz:

“In Veracruz, we are also working with the governor to reduce (the rates),” said Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
