Yucatán registered a new case of screwworm in humans, maintaining its third-place ranking nationally, according to the Ministry of Health. Additionally, it ranks eighth in the number of active cases with more than 100.
According to the Epidemiological Bulletin for week 17, from April 26 to May 2, six new infections were documented nationwide, bringing the national total to 282.
Chiapas remains the state with the highest number of cases, at 125, meaning it had no new cases during the last epidemiological period. Veracruz follows with three new cases, bringing its total to 31.
Yucatán’s number of cases of myiasis, caused by the screwworm fly, rose from 26 to 27, with figures updated as of May 8. The other two new infections in the country were reported in Guerrero and Querétaro. Querétaro registered its first human case last week.
The death toll in the country remains at two, the first occurring in Yucatán and the second in Oaxaca.
Regarding active cases of screwworm in cattle, there are currently 1,761 in the country, according to data from the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA) updated as of May 12. Of these, 931 are in cattle and 474 in dogs.
According to this report, the state with the most active cases in livestock is Veracruz, with 218; followed by Oaxaca with 211 and Puebla with 179. Yucatán currently ranks eighth nationally with 108 cases. Quintana Roo has 37 and Campeche has 30.
In cumulative cases since November 2014, 24,166 have been registered in the country. Of these, 15,674 occurred in cattle, while 4,358 were in dogs.
Yucatán ranks fourth in accumulated screwworm cases.
In this category, Chiapas leads the list with 6,682 cases, followed by Oaxaca with 3,884 and Veracruz with 3,542. Yucatán ranks fourth, with 2,080. Campeche has accumulated 907 cases and Quintana Roo 671.
