Trump Orders Tripling of Charges Against Mexican Politicians Under Anti-Terrorism Laws

Donald Trump’s administration has ordered the 93 U.S. federal prosecutors to triple the number of indictments against Mexican politicians allegedly linked to drug trafficking; these individuals may now be prosecuted under anti-terrorism laws, a move that escalates potential penalties to unprecedented levels.
The directive emerged from an internal Department of Justice teleconference led by Deputy Assistant Attorney General Aakash Singh, who was unequivocal: charges must be tripled against “corrupt officials who use their power to shield terrorists and those who traffic in misery and poison.”
This new strategy rests on the fact that cartels such as the Sinaloa Cartel and the CJNG have already been officially designated as foreign terrorist organizations. This designation allows prosecutors to bring charges not only for drug trafficking but also for “material support for terrorism”—a far more severe legal offense.
🔍 Singh was even more blunt: he stated that if these indictments cause annoyance or embarrassment to the Mexican government, he “couldn’t care less,” and that such political humiliation would be “the cherry on top” for Washington.
⚖️🛡️ This offensive follows the formal indictment issued on April 29 against Sinaloa’s Governor on leave, Rubén Rocha Moya; Senator Enrique Inzunza Cázarez; and eight other officials. DEA Administrator Terrance Cole summed it up in a phrase that is already reverberating throughout the Mexican political landscape: “This is just the beginning.”
