Zihuatanejo’s new port plaza: how much will it cost the people?

Although the municipal government has already kicked off the remodeling of the new Fisherman’s Plaza and the port area of Zihuatanejo, the official cost of the project has not yet been made public.

The project, spearheaded by Mayor Lizette Tapia Castro in coordination with naval and port authorities, includes a complete renovation of the plaza, the construction of new offices for the Port Captaincy, and adaptations for future ASIPONA (the Port Authority of the Nayarit) facilities.

“We obtained the permits from the General Directorate of Ports and we managed to get authorization for the demolition of what the Port Captaincy currently occupies. We are going to build their new offices where the maritime terminal is currently located,” revealed Lizette Tapia Castro, Mayor of Zihuatanejo.

However, the total investment amount is not detailed in the 2026 Expenditure Budget for the municipality of Zihuatanejo, a situation that has begun to raise questions among citizens about the transparency and priority of the project.

Preliminary estimates suggest the project could represent an investment of approximately 6 million pesos, a figure similar to what the municipality itself plans to allocate to the remodeling of the Ixtapa commercial zone.

During the official announcement, the mayor defended the project, arguing that Zihuatanejo faces a lack of ample public spaces for tourist events and family activities. The project aims to reclaim public spaces for residents and tourists.

“For many of us, passing by there felt like a limited space. We used to hold events there, fishing tournaments, and the space was sufficient. But the city is growing, the events are growing, and now it’s too small,” the mayor stated.

Naval authorities acknowledge municipal support

Naval authorities acknowledged that, unlike other municipalities, in this case, it is the City Council that is financially supporting improvements within the federal port area.

Despite the official discourse on tourism development and urban renewal, there is still no public document specifying the final cost of the project, the awarded contracts, or a complete financial breakdown. While acknowledging the lack of transparency, the project does represent the renovation of spaces that will be attractive to tourism.
