The news of the national strike called by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) has put parents on alert, wondering if the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) will suspend classes this Monday, June 1st.
Although the SEP calendar does not mark June 1st as a non-working day, thousands of students could miss classes in schools where teachers join the protests. We’ll tell you which students will not have classes this Monday.
When is the CNTE strike?
The CNTE has called for a national strike starting June 1, 2026, accompanied by demonstrations and a march that will depart from the Angel of Independence and proceed to the Zócalo in Mexico City. Furthermore, the dissident teachers’ union plans to set up a protest camp in the capital while negotiations with federal authorities continue.
Among the movement’s main demands are salary increases, changes to the pension system, and the repeal of the 2007 ISSSTE Law.
Why is the SEP suspending classes on Monday, June 1st?
The SEP did not decree a general suspension of classes for Monday, June 1st. According to the official calendar, the date does not appear as a mandatory day off or a day for the suspension of teaching duties.
However, some schools may suspend classes because teachers affiliated with the CNTE will be participating in the national strike. Therefore, students attending schools located in states with a strong presence of the CNTE could be affected; for example, in Oaxaca, Chiapas, Guerrero, Michoacán, Veracruz, Zacatecas, Yucatán, Hidalgo, Baja California, and some areas of Mexico City.
Given this situation, the recommendation for parents and guardians is to consult directly with each school to confirm whether in-person classes will be held.
When does the 2025-2026 school year officially end?
After several adjustments analyzed by education authorities, the official SEP (Ministry of Public Education) calendar maintains July 15, 2026, as the end date for the school year for basic education.
However, at least 10 states in Mexico have moved up the end of the 2025-2026 school year as a measure to safeguard the health of students and teachers in the face of the predicted high temperatures due to the heat wave.
For now, June 1 remains a normal school day for the SEP, but the CNTE (National Coordinator of Education Workers) strike could cause temporary closures in some schools. The key will be to stay tuned to announcements from each school and state education authorities in the coming hours.
