After stating that there is a campaign against the Mexican government originating in the United States, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo maintained that it is not being carried out by President Donald Trump’s administration, but rather orchestrated by far-right sectors in the US, who are joining forces with far-right sectors in Mexico. She asserted that these sectors seek to undermine relations between the Mexican and US governments, and emphasized that she possesses information to support this opinion.
After the Los Angeles newspaper La Opinión reported that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denied to the media outlet that the governors of Sonora, Alfonso Durazo, and Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal, had been granted special permission to travel to the US following the alleged cancellation of their visas, the mayor acknowledged that it was positive that this information had come to light, but warned that fake news would continue.
When asked this Monday at her morning press conference about the possible interests of US President Donald Trump’s administration in disseminating such news, Sheinbaum Pardo said: “I wouldn’t say it comes from President Trump’s administration. That’s my point of view. I do believe it’s some people, and certain sectors. I don’t think it’s a one-off. There are far-right sectors that are trying to prevent a good relationship between the Mexican and US governments.”
She then added: “I have information that allows me to say this, and I believe it to be true.”
However, she asserted that there are US media outlets that have been criticizing the Mexican government, even since the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Regarding the information about the alleged cancellation of visas for the governors of Sonora and Tamaulipas, he added that it’s not just a couple of newspapers, but that many of these articles “aim to construct a narrative that the United States government is persecuting governors” of Mexico.
Therefore, he insisted, “it’s good that this information came out, in which one of the institutions of the United States government says that no such permit exists for these two governors,” but “this will continue, these fake news stories or these attempts to undermine a good relationship,” which are driven by “far-right sectors in the United States that join forces with far-right sectors in Mexico.”
He considered that “they want to use this for their election in November of this year and they also want to affect the Mexican government with an eye toward the 2027 election,” but he pointed out that this type of campaign “doesn’t resonate” with the Mexican population.
She added that amidst this context, the National Action Party (PAN) filed a complaint against López Obrador with the International Criminal Court for alleged links to drug trafficking. “You can’t get more hypocritical than that. Maybe they want to atone for their sins, I don’t know. They should just pray for a few of them… because who believes them? Nobody.”
At the same time, regarding the dinner organized this weekend by the American Society (AMSOC), which was attended by representatives of opposition parties, the head of the federal executive branch clarified that representatives of the federal government were also invited, but decided not to attend.
Regarding the presence of various members of the PAN and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), she questioned: “It was the PRIAN (PRI-PAN alliance), and indeed, we should see what each of them was doing there; what their interest was, who invited them. We should see who paid for the dinner, that would be very interesting.”
After it was mentioned that the event was co-sponsored by businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the mayor remarked, “You see how things are connected.” She explained that these opposition figures “are the ones who go to the United States to speak ill of Mexico, because they don’t speak ill of the government, but rather of Mexico itself, and they call for U.S. intervention in Mexico.”
Meanwhile, in response to businessman Salinas Pliego’s criticism of the Olinia project, Sheinbaum Pardo revealed that the Grupo Salinas motorcycle brand “brings all the components from other countries and assembles them here, or they simply bring them in complete.” Explaining that different taxes are levied depending on whether the motorcycles enter the country complete or in parts, she revealed that “they used to bring the tires separately from the motorcycle, just to put the tires on and thus pay less in taxes. It was another scheme to cheat.” She described it as “another form of tax evasion,” which her administration shut down.
