With the aim of reflecting on the intersection of traditional knowledge, scientific research, and the state’s textile heritage, a photography and textile exhibition titled “Cochineal: Citizen Science and Education for Biocultural Diversity” opens to the public this Friday, June 12. The opening event is scheduled for 5:00 PM at the Alfonso Rivas Gallery.

The exhibition is presented by specialist Claudia Roxana Juárez López, who—through a carefully curated selection of pieces and visual records—seeks to highlight the historical and contemporary importance of this parasitic insect found on the prickly pear cactus, which is key to the production of the color carmine. This substance has been used since pre-Hispanic times to dye the threads and textiles that define the identity of the region’s diverse communities.

The general public, as well as students, artisans, and researchers, are invited to attend this event, which promotes the recognition of Oaxacan biodiversity and the preservation of ancestral natural dyeing techniques.
