Carolina del Carmen Tun Pérez, president of the Hopelchén Mayan Legacy Artisan Space, expressed her support and satisfaction with the approval of the reform promoted by Representative Delma del Carmen Rabelo Cuevas of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) parliamentary group. The reform seeks to strengthen the protection and promotion of artisanal activity in Campeche, with a special focus on women artisans.

Following the initiative’s approval in the State Congress, Tun Pérez considered this reform an important opportunity for artisans to be taken into account and receive greater benefits that will directly impact their families’ economies.

“We hope they will consider us as artisans, because it will greatly benefit our families’ finances and help our crafts stand out in other places,” she stated.

The artisan representative emphasized that one of the main challenges producers face is the lack of appreciation for their work, as their pieces are often subject to haggling. However, she acknowledged that tourists tend to appreciate the effort and quality of Campeche’s handicrafts more.

“Many times, handicrafts are undervalued, and people haggle a lot. Tourists are the ones who buy our handicrafts the most, and they’ve never haggled with us; they pay a fair price and value what we do,” she commented.

The Legado Maya Artisan Space features 22 artisans who create a wide variety of products, including Campeche blouses, traditional robes, rebozo-style dresses with hand-stitched embroidery, leek embroidery, woodwork, peanut products, pumpkin seed products, and artisanal creams.

“We support this approval because we believe it will bring significant benefits to all Campeche artisans and to those of us who make a living from this activity,” she stated.

Tun Pérez invited everyone to visit the artisan space located in Hopelchén, open every day, where handicrafts made by artisans from different communities are exhibited and sold.

The artisan emphasized that the new legislation will contribute to the rescue and preservation of the state’s artisanal traditions.
