The beginning of summer in Mexico arrives accompanied by heavy to intense rains in much of the country, as well as a new heat wave in northern and northwestern states, reported the National Meteorological Service (SMN), of the National Water Commission (Conagua).
According to the agency, summer officially began this Sunday, June 21 at 02:24 hours, while various atmospheric systems will favor unstable conditions in the coming days.
For this Sunday and the start of the week, a dry line over the northern border, low-pressure channels, cyclonic circulations, and tropical waves numbers 8, 9, and 10 will cause showers and heavy to very heavy rains in much of the national territory.
The highest rainfall accumulations are expected in Durango, Zacatecas, Nayarit, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, where precipitation between 50 and 75 millimeters could be recorded. Additionally, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas will be the states with the highest risk of heavy rains during Monday, June 22.
The SMN warned that the precipitation could be accompanied by electrical discharges, strong wind gusts, and hail. Likewise, there is a risk of rising river and stream levels, landslides, flooding, waterlogging, and reduced visibility on roads.
Heat wave will affect the northern part of the country
Meanwhile, the weather will continue to be extremely hot in several regions. The meteorological agency forecasts the beginning and strengthening of a heat wave in Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Durango, and Coahuila.
Maximum temperatures could reach between 40 and 45 degrees in states such as Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. Even by midweek, temperatures above 45 degrees are forecast in areas of Sonora and Baja California.
Rains will continue during the week
The SMN extended forecast indicates that between Tuesday, June 23 and Thursday, June 25, heavy to intense rains will persist in the western, central, eastern, southern, and southeastern parts of the country.
The states with the highest probability of intense precipitation will be Guerrero, Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas, where rainfall accumulations between 75 and 150 millimeters could be recorded.
Additionally, a new tropical wave, identified as number 11, could approach the Yucatán Peninsula toward Thursday, reinforcing the probability of rains in southeastern Mexico.
Given these conditions, authorities urged the population to stay attentive to official notices from the National Meteorological Service and follow Civil Protection recommendations to prevent risks.
