A mayor in central Mexico is facing explosive allegations after prosecutors claimed she helped orchestrate her own kidnapping in an attempt to divert more than 40 million pesos ($2.3 million) in public funds under the guise of a ransom payment.
Nancy Nápoles, mayor of Tenancingo and a member of Mexico’s ruling Morena party, has denied the accusations, calling the case politically motivated. Authorities allege the scheme involved a fake abduction and demands for millions in exchange for her release.
According to investigators, the plot began to unravel when a witness reported seeing the mayor being forced into a vehicle, triggering a police response that ultimately exposed the alleged operation. Prosecutors say several suspects have been arrested, while members of the mayor’s inner circle remain under investigation.
The case has drawn national attention as Mexico’s government continues its public push against corruption, with investigators now examining whether public resources were targeted as part of the alleged scheme.
