The celebration of Saint John the Baptist, observed every June 24th by the Catholic Church, holds special importance for communities in Querétaro due to its religious significance and its connection to traditions involving water and rainfall, noted Martín Lara Becerril, spokesperson for the Diocese of Querétaro.

The priest explained that Saint John the Baptist holds a privileged place in the liturgical calendar, as he is one of only three figures whose birth is celebrated by the Church—alongside Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary. He highlighted that John’s significance lies in his role of presenting Jesus to the people as the promised Messiah.

“Saint John the Baptist is the only prophet granted the honor of presenting the Lamb of God to mankind as the Messiah,” stated Lara Becerril.

He added that this figure represents the link between the Old and New Testaments, making his presence fundamental to Christian tradition.

“I view John the Baptist as a hinge: he closes the Old Testament and opens the New Testament. He stands right between the two testaments, which accounts for his immense importance,” the diocesan spokesperson remarked.

The spokesperson also noted that the figure of Saint John the Baptist is closely linked to water, as he performed baptisms in the Jordan River. Consequently, in various regions of the country—and particularly in agricultural communities—this date is often associated with the arrival of rains and the hope for a successful farming season.

The significance of water and festivities in Querétaro communities
“Regarding the theme of water: Saint John the Baptist baptized people using water from the Jordan. This gives him a unique connection to water—not just in the context of baptism, but also regarding the water that comes to us from the heavens,” commented Father Lara.

In Querétaro, the feast of Saint John the Baptist remains deeply rooted in various communities and parishes that honor him as their patron saint; each year, religious celebrations and traditional activities take place, forming part of the state’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
