Oaxaca Is Bringing Its Culture, Cuisine, and Traditions to Los Pinos

Oaxaca is a state rich in biodiversity, making it a national reference for culture and gastronomy. For this reason, the “Oaxaca at Los Pinos” Festival will take place at the Los Pinos Cultural Complex, bringing together music, dance, gastronomy, handicrafts, and cultural expressions from the state’s Indigenous communities.

The event will offer a representative showcase of Oaxaca’s culinary traditions, performing arts, archaeology, music, and a wide variety of products from local producers.

What Will Be Featured at the Oaxaca at Los Pinos Festival?

Over the course of two days, visitors will enjoy philharmonic bands, traditional musical groups, interactive workshops, and artistic performances.

The festival’s gastronomy will play a central role through the Cencalli Smoke Kitchens, featuring dishes from Tlacolula de Matamoros, Santa Ana del Valle, San Juan Bautista Cuicatlán, as well as the Coast and Isthmus regions.

At the Cencalli Tejaban, local producers will showcase a variety of food and agro-industrial products. From Villa de Tututepec de Melchor Ocampo come corozo tortillas, corn tostadas, and passion fruit, papaya, and mango jams with tamarind. Meanwhile, San Juan Bautista Cuicatlán will offer jams, regional sweets, traditional bread, and products made with locally sourced ingredients.

The marketplace will also include fruit snacks, herbal infusions, powdered mole, chocolate, snacks, cheese, coffee, honey, mezcal, traditional liqueurs, and powdered tejate.

Workshops and Handicraft Sales

Visitors can participate in a red clay pottery workshop led by Cristina Santiago Antonio from San Marcos Tlapazola, a community renowned for its pottery tradition passed down through generations of women artisans.

Additional activities include:

  • Alebrije painting
  • Temporary tattoos inspired by Zapotec and Mixtec pre-Hispanic symbols
  • Stone carving of traditional figures known as gulaals
  • Workshops dedicated to creating the everlasting flower

The handicraft exhibition will feature textiles, traditional clothing, handmade huaraches, filigree jewelry, goldsmithing, tin crafts, red, green, and black pottery, alebrijes, and waist-loom woven pieces made by artisans from Villa Zaachila, Pinotepa de Don Luis, Ejutla de Crespo, Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, and San Bartolo Coyotepec.

Saturday’s artistic program highlights traditional musical expressions with performances by:

  • Los Tejones Nee Bya International Traditional Orchestra

  • The Traditional Valley Band

Sunday’s program combines tradition with contemporary artistic expression through performances by:

  • Tapacamino Colectivo Musiquero
  • Mixe soprano María Reyna
  • Ensamble Bandido del Camino, Noé Soto, and the Ka’ux Women’s Band
  • Oaxaca State Dance Company
  • Cultural presentations from the Sierra Norte and Papaloapan regions

Visitors will also be able to explore a replica of Tomb 1 from San Pablo Villa de Mitla, offering an immersive experience that showcases the architecture and symbolism of Zapotec culture.

When and Where Will the Oaxaca at Los Pinos Festival Take Place?

The “Oaxaca at Los Pinos” Festival is a gathering where communities, artists, traditional cooks, musicians, and artisans share the cultural diversity of Oaxaca with visitors of all ages. Admission is completely free and open to the public.
