New Laredo–Tampico Economic Corridor Aims to Transform Trade and Connectivity in Tamaulipas
The New Laredo–Tampico Economic Corridor will not only connect the major commercial hubs in northern and southern Tamaulipas, but also seeks to transform regional logistics through a new highway and a direct air route.
The municipal governments of Tampico and Nuevo Laredo signed a major commercial agreement that formally establishes the New Laredo–Tampico Economic Corridor, a strategy designed to strengthen trade, attract investment, and create an economic development platform linking the northern and southern regions of the state.
The agreement was signed by mayors Mónica Villarreal Anaya and Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal, who stated that the partnership will allow businesses, entrepreneurs, and small companies from both cities to market their products across both regions, creating new business opportunities and increasing Tamaulipas’ competitiveness.
During the meeting, both mayors emphasized that the agreement will strengthen not only economic cooperation but also institutional collaboration between the two municipalities by leveraging the logistical advantages of the Port of Tampico and Nuevo Laredo’s position as Latin America’s busiest land border crossing.
They also announced that work is underway to establish a direct flight between the two cities, a project expected to improve mobility for business leaders, investors, and visitors.
Key Connectivity Projects: New Highway and Direct Flight
Representatives from the National Chambers of Commerce (Canaco) of Tampico and Nuevo Laredo, along with business leaders participating in the Economic and Commercial Corridor, attended the signing ceremony.
During the event, Eduardo Manzur Manzur, president of Canaco Tampico, emphasized the importance of advancing two strategic infrastructure projects to strengthen connectivity within the state:

- A direct flight between Tampico and Nuevo Laredo
- A new highway connecting the two regions
According to Manzur, one of the main obstacles to greater economic integration is the current travel route, as trips to Nuevo Laredo often require passing through the neighboring state of Nuevo León, increasing both travel time and transportation costs.
For this reason, he proposed moving forward with the Tampico–Reynosa Highway, extending it to Nuevo Laredo. This route would keep commercial traffic within Tamaulipas while strengthening the state’s logistics network.
He also noted that a direct air connection would facilitate travel for business executives, investors, and tourists while encouraging greater commercial exchange between the northern border region and southern Tamaulipas.
Expected Economic Benefits
According to Manzur, these strategic infrastructure projects would:
- Reduce travel times.
- Increase the movement of goods.
- Boost tourism.
- Create new jobs.
- Attract additional investment.
Together, these initiatives are expected to establish the New Laredo–Tampico Economic Corridor as one of the primary drivers of economic development in the state of Tamaulipas.
