The Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Secretariat of Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jorge de Jesús Montagner Mendoza, attended the sinking ceremony of the former ARM Ortega, a decommissioned vessel from the Mexican Navy, which was donated to the Government of the State of Tamaulipas to be incorporated into the artificial reef project in the Gulf of Mexico.

The former ARM Ortega becomes the fourth of nine naval vessels that will make up this artificial reef project, located off the coast of Matamoros.

This initiative seeks to strengthen fishing productivity, promote marine biodiversity, and foster the conservation of marine ecosystems.

Undersecretary Jorge de Jesús Montagner Mendoza attended the event on behalf of the Secretary of Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture, Antonio Varela Flores, as a demonstration of the Government of Tamaulipas’ commitment to the sustainable development of the fishing sector.

This environmental strategy exemplifies the coordinated work between the Mexican Navy and the Government of the State of Tamaulipas, led by Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya. Furthermore, it is a project that forms part of the efforts to strengthen marine fisheries, expand refuge and breeding areas for various species, and contribute to the conservation and fisheries management measures established within the framework of binational agreements with the neighboring country to the north.

With these actions, the Government of Tamaulipas reaffirms its commitment to promoting initiatives that strengthen the sustainable development of fishing communities, protect natural resources, and generate economic and environmental benefits for present and future generations.
