Fight between tourists and taxi driver on the Cozumel boardwalk leaves 2 arrested and one hospitalized

A large police presence was reported on the Cozumel boardwalk this Sunday after three Mexican tourists were involved in a series of altercations that escalated into a fight, leaving one person hospitalized and two arrested. The incident occurred in one of the island’s busiest areas, drawing attention from both visitors and residents.

What is known about the fight?

According to local residents, two men and a woman were drinking alcohol at a restaurant when they began arguing and confronting other people present. The situation quickly escalated, and municipal police officers arrived to try to control the scene.

However, videos circulating on social media show those involved also allegedly insulting and pushing municipal police officers who responded to the report.

They also threatened people who were recording the incident with their cell phones. Tensions escalated when one of the tourists confronted a taxi driver, sparking a brawl involving several people.

The police officer deployed tear gas against the crowd.

As a result of the confrontation, two men were injured by blows; one lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment. Meanwhile, a woman and another man were detained by authorities and taken to the Municipal Detention Center while the corresponding investigations are carried out to determine responsibility.

The Cozumel city council reported that the establishment where the incident occurred was closed, and that two people involved in the fight are under medical observation. The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office is conducting the corresponding investigations.
