President Claudia Sheinbaum responded that visiting the country “is safe” and lamented the deaths during the sporting celebrations.

UK authorities issued a travel alert for Mexico on Thursday (July 2, 2026), where the British national team will face the Mexican team in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup this Sunday.

The British Foreign Office (FFO) advised against travel to certain areas of Mexico, while updating its alert with “new relevant information” for British citizens visiting the country.

The recommendation is to avoid non-essential travel to areas in the states of Chihuahua (north), Sinaloa (northwest), Tamaulipas (northeast), Zacatecas (central), Guanajuato (central), Michoacán (west), Jalisco (west), Colima (west), Guerrero (south), Chiapas (south), and Baja California (northwest).

Furthermore, it warns its citizens that four people died in overcrowded conditions during the World Cup celebrations, and that mobile phone thefts and cases of adulterated beverages have increased in connection with the sporting event.

Sheinbaum: Mexico “has no problem”

Without specifically addressing this alert, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that authorities are “taking some measures to install more screens” along Reforma Avenue, a popular celebration area, to ensure that “people don’t congregate in certain places, but rather disperse.”

“It’s safe to visit the country, there’s no problem,” the president declared at her daily press conference from Mexico City, where England will face the hosts on July 5.

Sheinbaum described as “regrettable” the deaths of three people from asphyxiation during World Cup celebrations, and of another person who died in a hospital after suffering cardiac arrest during the massive celebration of the national team’s advancement to the round of 16.

“I have called on all fans, all those watching the game, both here in the Zócalo and in other locations, to act responsibly.” “Trust people, avoid excessive alcohol, and act responsibly,” he said.
