Most Gas Stations in Yucatán No Longer Appear to Honor Voluntary Fuel Price Agreement

Most gas stations in Yucatán no longer appear to be complying with the national voluntary agreement to keep gasoline prices capped in support of household finances, as prices for both Magna and Premium gasoline have increased over the past two weeks.

The only fuel that has remained at a fixed price is diesel, which continues to sell for 27 pesos per liter. Diesel is essential for freight vehicles, public transportation, and industrial machinery.

Gasoline Prices in Mérida

According to a survey of service stations in Mérida, last week most gas stations were selling:

  • Magna: 24.24 pesos per liter
  • Premium: 27.99 pesos per liter
  • Diesel: 27.00 pesos per liter
A pesar del pacto voluntario entre el gobierno federal y empresarios gasolineros, en varias estaciones de servicio en Mérida el precio de la Magna supera el tope de 24 pesos por litro

As of this Wednesday, most stations are offering:

  • Magna: 24.29 pesos per liter
  • Premium: 27.69 pesos per liter
  • Diesel: 27.00 pesos per liter

The most noticeable increase has been in Magna gasoline, which rose by 30 centavos per liter. Under the voluntary agreement between the federal government and fuel retailers, Magna was supposed to remain below 24 pesos per liter, leading many stations to previously sell it for 23.99 pesos per liter.

Today, only a small number of gas stations in Mérida continue to respect that price, while most have raised it to 24.29 pesos per liter.

Although most stations have increased Magna prices, a few locations continue to sell it for 22.99 pesos per liter. However, there have been claims that this lower-priced fuel may be of inferior quality.

Some gas stations also appear to avoid displaying their prices clearly, either by leaving electronic price signs turned off or by not making prices easily visible.

Federal Government Agreement With Fuel Retailers

A pesar del pacto voluntario entre el gobierno federal y empresarios gasolineros, en varias estaciones de servicio en Mérida el precio de la Magna supera el tope de 24 pesos por litro

In 2025, the federal government and fuel station owners signed a voluntary agreement to keep the price of Magna gasoline below 24 pesos per liter. During that period, however, Premium gasoline and diesel experienced significant price increases.

Following complaints from transportation companies, the government and fuel retailers agreed to include diesel in the price stabilization program by establishing a maximum price of 27 pesos per liter. Fuel retailers have generally complied with this measure, reducing diesel prices by nearly 1 peso per liter.

However, Magna gasoline no longer appears to be subject to effective price control. It remains the most widely used fuel, and its price has continued to rise each week despite the six-month voluntary agreement that has been in effect since March 2026.

According to President Claudia Sheinbaum during her March 11, 2026 morning press conference, the agreement was renewed for an additional six months.

In a later press conference, the president stated that the National Policy to Promote Gasoline Price Stabilization for the Benefit of the People of Mexico remained in force, with the participation of 96 percent of the country’s gas stations.

Why Are Gasoline Prices Rising in Mérida?

A Yucatán fuel industry businessman, who requested anonymity, suggested that the increase in Magna prices may be because many fuel station owners chose not to participate in the voluntary agreement.

He also speculated that some retailers may be taking advantage of the excitement surrounding Mexico’s national soccer team and the 2026 FIFA World Cup to raise prices without drawing significant attention from consumers.
