Tulum family, Mayor Diego Castañón has announced with great fanfare that he fired nine officials for “malpractice.” Two from Civil Protection, seven from the Auditing Department. He claims there is “zero tolerance for corruption.”
It sounds nice… but here at Con El Firme, we ask the questions that make the Governor’s office uncomfortable:
- THE FACT HE DID PROVIDE: “It was proven that they engaged in malpractice.” Question: If it’s been proven, where are the criminal complaints? Firing them isn’t justice, it’s a cover-up.
- THE FACT HE’S HIDING: Seven were from the Auditing Department. Question: Who were they extorting? The taco vendor? The artisan? The hotel owner? Because those seven weren’t acting on their own. Who gave them the order to go out and “audit” the people?
- THE KEY PHRASE: “There is no room for those who betray the trust.” Question: And what about the bosses who ordered them to betray, is there room for them? Because the fish rots from the head down.
- THE SPEECH: ‘I guarantee confidentiality if you report.’ Tulum’s response: People already reported it on social media. That’s why you fired nine. “It wasn’t your ‘zero tolerance’ policy; it was that the extortion was exposed on social media at the time.
Firing nine low-level prosecutors or inspectors isn’t cleaning house; it’s sweeping the dirt under the rug. Zero tolerance would mean naming directors, council members, and department heads. Zero tolerance would mean having the Prosecutor’s Office investigate the chain of command.
Meanwhile, Tulum asks: If you already knew they were extorting people, why wait until now? How many people had to cry before you acted? And most importantly: Did you fire them because they were stealing… or because they were caught?
Tulum doesn’t need scapegoats; it needs justice. And here at Con El Firme, we won’t be silent until those at the top fall, not just those at the bottom.”
The people ask: Did you fire the employees or protect the bosses? Because in Tulum we already know that the one below doesn’t steal if the one above doesn’t let him.
