A forensic doctor with the Tabasco State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) was arrested after a multi-million-dollar fraud was uncovered. He had falsified a death certificate to facilitate the illegal collection of a life insurance policy.
At a press conference, the institution’s deputy attorney general, Gilberto Melquiades Miranda Díaz, confirmed that the public servant was arrested last Friday after the insurance company itself detected serious irregularities during the claims process.
During the official investigation at the cemetery in the “Sabina” neighborhood of Villahermosa, FGE experts exhumed the coffin where the insured person’s remains were supposedly buried to verify the citizen’s alleged death.
However, upon opening the coffin, authorities discovered that it did not contain a body, but rather a block of cement strategically placed to simulate the weight of a human being and deceive the authorities.
“Last week the corresponding hearing began, and it will continue on July 8th, when the Judge of Control will decide whether to formally charge this individual with attempted fraud, falsification of documents, and criminal association. He is currently in pretrial detention, and we will await the judge’s decision on July 8th,” he stated.
The Deputy Attorney General explained that the investigation remains completely open, as law enforcement agents continue their efforts to locate and apprehend the other accomplices involved in this corruption network.
