Two former drivers from the “Andrés Quintana Roo” Taxi Drivers’ Union were sentenced to six years in prison for beating and robbing an Uber driver in Cancún.
According to the State Attorney General’s Office, a judge handed down a guilty verdict against Alex Iván Cauich Kantún and Yorzua Waldemar Echanove González for the crime of aggravated robbery; the court also imposed a fine of 3,112.20 pesos.

Investigations indicate that the incident took place on July 27, 2023, when the victim went to the ADO bus terminal to pick up three Greek tourists. While he was loading luggage into his vehicle, five uniformed taxi drivers approached to prevent him from providing the service.
The Prosecutor’s Office stated that the taxi drivers warned him he could not transport the foreign nationals and threatened to beat him if he did so. When the driver replied that he was simply doing his job, Alex Iván Cauich threw a rock into the vehicle.
Subsequently, Yorzua Waldemar Echanove grabbed the victim by the neck, while Alex Iván Cauich punched him in the stomach and stole his cell phone. At the same time, Yorzua Waldemar took his wallet, which contained one thousand pesos in cash.

Following the assault, both men attempted to flee in different directions but were detained by Municipal Police officers and turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The Prosecutor’s Office noted that the attack was motivated by a desire to stop the driver from continuing to provide private transportation services via a digital platform; this was the basis for their prosecution and eventual conviction. (Agencia SIM)
