Hong Kong-based Hutchison Ports will invest $33 million to carry out the third expansion phase of its specialized container terminal at the Port of Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, increasing its capacity from 1.8 million to 2.3 million containers per year.
The expansion project includes the construction of an additional 345 meters of quay, the addition of 28 hectares of new operational area, and the deployment of 12 automated electric ARTG 6+1 cranes, aiming to streamline cargo handling and boost the port’s logistical competitiveness.
With this investment, Lázaro Cárdenas reinforces its role as a leading Pacific port and a strategic hub for trade between Asia and North America. Mexico is Hong Kong’s largest trading partner in Latin America. Mexican exports to Hong Kong reached approximately $1.63 billion in 2025, consisting primarily of electrical and electronic equipment, machinery, and certain minerals.
