During the first half of 2026, traffic fatalities in the state of Querétaro increased by 12.7% compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.

According to the federal report, between January and June of this year, 195 victims of negligent homicide due to traffic accidents were recorded, 22 more than the 173 reported during the same period in 2025.

March saw the highest number of cases with a total of 37, followed by April with 36, February and May with 35 each, January with 30, and June with 22.

In contrast, the number of victims of injuries from traffic incidents decreased by 8.7%, from 742 in the first half of 2025 to 678 this year.

This coincides with the report from the Federal Ministry of Health, which reported a total of 3,772 cases of injuries from motor vehicle accidents, a 1.9% reduction compared to the first six months of 2025, when 3,845 patients were registered.

It’s worth mentioning that a year earlier, on July 17, 2025, the deaths of two young people in a collision at the intersection of Calzada de Los Arcos and Bernardo Quintana Boulevard led to various measures by the state and municipal governments of Querétaro to reduce traffic fatalities.

Following the accident, which claimed the lives of Mitzi García and Martín Paz, the mayor of Querétaro, Felipe Fernando Macías, promoted an initiative to reform the State Penal Code to criminalize vehicular homicide. Ultimately, the proposal was rejected, but it was replaced by a reform to increase the maximum penalty for negligent homicide from 7 to 12 years when the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In addition, the municipal government increased sobriety checkpoints from 3 to 5 days per week, along with extended hours and expanded road coverage.

According to the latest report from the Superior Court of Justice of Querétaro, as of the end of June, the alleged perpetrator of the double homicide, identified as Paola “N”, alias “Mufasa”, remains in justified preventive detention, awaiting her trial hearing.
