The Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba – Jalisco Chapter held a demonstration on Sunday and, together with several civil organizations, including the Free Palestine Committee, organized a march titled “For the Peoples Who Resist” toward downtown Guadalajara.
Under the slogan “Cuba Is Not Alone,” dozens of participants gathered at the Palestina Libre Walkway—the symbolic name given by social organizations to the Escorza pedestrian walkway, located at the intersection of Escorza Street and Juárez Avenue, next to the Paraninfo of the University of Guadalajara. The event commemorated the 73rd anniversary of the attack on the Moncada Barracks in Cuba.
The political and cultural gathering formed part of a nationwide day of solidarity with Cuba, a country that has been under a U.S. trade embargo since the early 1960s, following the success of the Cuban Revolution led by the late Fidel Castro.
The event also coincided with Cuba’s National Day of Rebellion, which commemorates the beginning of the 1953 revolutionary uprising that culminated six years later with the revolutionary forces entering Havana. It was also included in the national campaign “100 Actions for Fidel,” specifically as actions 61 and 62 organized by the solidarity committee.
March Through Downtown Guadalajara
At the conclusion of the political event, participants marched along Juárez Avenue toward the city center in what they called the “March of the Peoples Who Resist.”
At the front of the march, participants carried a large banner reading:
“Stop Zionism and Imperialism. Long Live the Peoples Who Resist.”
The march proceeded without major incidents. In addition to banners, participants waved the flags of Palestine, Venezuela, Cuba, and Mexico.
Besides the Free Palestine Committee and the Mexican Movement of Solidarity with Cuba, members of the Popular Assembly of Jalisco also took part in the event.
