A 25-year-old man was arrested by officers from the Gamas Motorcycle Squadron of the Guadalajara Police Department in the Electricistas neighborhood after being intercepted while transporting approximately 53 specimens of exotic and protected species aboard a vehicle.
The seizure took place at the intersection of Avenida Revolución and Ejido Street, where officers stopped the driver after he ran a red light. During a routine inspection, police discovered several boxes containing the specimens in the rear of the vehicle.
Among the animals seized, which are protected under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 because they are classified in one of the risk categories, authorities counted:
- 2 crocodiles
- 6 leopard geckos
- 10 bearded dragons
- 7 corn snakes
- 1 red-footed tortoise
- 2 savannah monitors
- 5 tarantulas
- 10 crayfish
- 5 baby mice
- 3 Lepidophyma lizards
- 2 Opheodrys snakes
The suspect, identified as Ulises “N”, was turned over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to determine his legal status, while the animals were placed under the custody of the appropriate authorities.
