The National Urban Public Safety Survey reveals that the feeling of insecurity in the port city nearly doubled in a year, while trust in the effectiveness of the municipal government is among the lowest in the country.
The perception of insecurity among the population of Puerto Vallarta reached 65.4% in June 2026, according to the most recent National Urban Public Safety Survey (ENSU) by INEGI, published on July 24. This figure represents a considerable jump from the 27.3% recorded in June 2025, one of the most pronounced increases among the 91 urban areas measured by the institute.
Compared to March 2026, when the indicator stood at 59.9%, the increase was not statistically significant according to INEGI’s methodology, suggesting that the perception of insecurity had already risen sharply since the beginning of the year and remained at high levels during the second quarter.
The port also appears among the cities with the least confidence in the ability of its government to solve the main problems: only 13.3% of the population considered that the municipal administration was very or somewhat effective, the second lowest figure in the country, only above Cuautitlán Izcalli (12.4%) and below Mexicali (13.6%).
