Andrés Manuel López Beltrán would not be the only son of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) whose U.S. visa was reportedly canceled.
According to journalist Salvador García Soto, in his column for El Universal, José Ramón López Beltrán and Gonzalo López Beltrán would also have lost their visas to enter the United States.
The journalist attributed the decision to a “pressure strategy by Trumpism, which has been increasingly escalating in tone and in actions against the political class governing Mexico.”
That strategy had already included alleged investigations into AMLO’s son over alleged crimes.
Three of AMLO’s sons had their visas canceled
According to García Soto, citing U.S. sources, it was Undersecretary of State Christopher Landau, who on social media refers to himself as ‘The Visa Canceller’, who personally decided to revoke the visas of the former president’s three sons.
“He sent the former president’s sons a personalized notice informing them of the decision to cancel their visas,” which allegedly occurred on May 24 but was only recently communicated to them.
García Soto also cited journalist Ramón Alberto Garza, who claimed that AMLO had left his “La Chingada” ranch in Palenque to travel to Mexico City because of the visa issue involving his sons.
It was allegedly AMLO himself who drafted Andy’s letter to President Donald Trump, in which he called for the removal of Secretary Marco Rubio and Undersecretary Landau, while also referring to them as “Hitlerites,” “gang leaders,” and “scoundrels.”
“Código Magenta attributed the former president with drafting the letter [….] because of the similarity between that text and other letters López Obrador recently sent to Trump, such as the one dated June 3 in which he defended President Sheinbaum and accused the United States of interference.”
“Going after Andy means going after his father. There is no way to avoid reaching his father through this. What message are they sending him? First, a little warning: ‘either you do what we are going to tell you to do, or you will suffer the same fate as Maduro,’” Garza said in the cited interview.
Is Trump going after AMLO’s sons?
García Soto argued that “it is becoming increasingly clear” that the Trump administration does have an investigation into AMLO’s sons, particularly Andrés Manuel, who held a position within Morena, the party founded by his father.
It should be recalled that at the end of July, an alleged FBI investigation into a company linked to Andy López Beltrán was reported. The company was allegedly linked to fuel theft and connections to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
This is in addition to the Mexican politicians whose visas have been revoked since the beginning of Trump’s second term, as well as arrest warrants and extradition requests involving active officials, including Governor Rubén Rocha Moya.
“The limit that the U.S. government had not crossed until now, which was directly targeting the family of the former Mexican president, has now been broken. What is coming in the next few days and weeks, as Undersecretary Christopher Landau has sarcastically anticipated, no longer points only to the former president’s closest collaborators and friends, but to his own family.
If until now there had been leaked recordings, documents, and information about judicial accusations or alleged investigations involving Morena governors such as Rubén Rocha Moya, Marina del Pilar, Alfonso Durazo, or Américo Villarreal, whose visas were also canceled, and there has also been discussion about the loss of the U.S. visa of Adán Augusto López and investigations against him over the fuel theft issue, the U.S. offensive has now escalated directly toward López Obrador’s family circle, which also places the former president in the sights of the Trump administration.”
The journalist added that the upcoming U.S. congressional elections will influence the intensification of Trump’s offensive against Mexico’s left-wing party: “the beginning of the end” of the Obrador administration’s political movement.
