Health authorities in Durango, led by the Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks of the State of Durango (Coprised), have issued a formal alert following the detection of irregular sales and distribution of “pirate” or counterfeit eggs across the region.
Key Details of the Sanitary Alert
Targeted Brands: The counterfeit products have been found illegally using the identification and branding of established producers, specifically targeting well-known labels like Huevo San Juan.
Locations Affected: Initial cases and enforcement operations were concentrated in Gómez Palacio and the broader Laguna region of Durango, including inspections at major distribution hubs like the local Mercado de Abastos, where hundreds of unverified packages lacking mandatory sanitary tracking were seized.
Health Risks: Officials emphasize that consuming unverified products poses severe public health threats. Because the source, farm of origin, and handling conditions are completely unknown, consumers face heightened risks of exposure to bacteria such as Salmonella, which can cause intense diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps, high fever, nausea, and vomiting.
How to Identify Authentic Products: Authorities advise consumers to thoroughly inspect packaging and check for official security markers, such as the specific five-character code printed in blue ink directly onto the eggshells of certified products, as well as purchasing strictly from established, regulated supermarkets and local stores.
