What was the latest strong earthquake recorded in Mexico?
On July 17, 2026, the National Seismological Service (SSN) reported a magnitude 7.4 earthquake located off the coast of the state of Chiapas, 135 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo. The earthquake occurred at 08:48 Central Mexico time. The epicenter coordinates were 14.162° N latitude and 93.287° W longitude, at a depth of 10 km.
Mexico is located in a highly seismic region due to the interaction of five tectonic plates: the North American Plate, Cocos Plate, Pacific Plate, Rivera Plate, and Caribbean Plate. For this reason, earthquakes are common. The SSN reports an average of 60 earthquakes per day with a magnitude greater than M2.0.
Chiapas is one of the most seismically active states in Mexico. The origin of this seismic activity is related to the convergent contact between major tectonic plates: the Cocos Plate and the North American Plate, while in southern Chiapas, the contact occurs between the Cocos Plate and the Caribbean Plate. The interaction between these plates takes place along the Pacific coast, off the coast of the state.
