Federal Deputy Víctor Pérez Díaz said that the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo passenger train project is experiencing delays in Nuevo León and that there are still pending issues related to right-of-way acquisition and the complete definition of the executive project.
A year after work began on the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo passenger train, the project has shown no visible progress in Nuevo León, and there are still pending issues related to rights of way, according to Víctor Pérez Díaz, president of the Communications and Transportation Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
The federal legislator said there is still uncertainty surrounding different aspects of the project, including the final alignment of the viaduct and the timeline for construction to begin in Nuevo León.
According to Pérez Díaz, in some areas there is still no complete certainty regarding rights of way, and in the case of Santa Catarina, so far they have only observed work related to soil mechanics studies.
“What we have observed at the entrance to Santa Catarina, in some sections of Santa Catarina, is that soil mechanics studies are being carried out. We do not know what the situation is, when it will enter, when it will begin, and all of that,” he said.
They call for clarification on where the train will run in Nuevo León
Pérez Díaz said it is necessary to make more information about the project public because questions are beginning to arise among residents of the municipalities through which the railway project would pass.
“This needs to be opened up, because people are already beginning to ask what is going to be done, where the viaduct will pass, what works will be carried out, and how long its development will take,” he said.
According to information provided by the legislator, the train will enter from Coahuila and travel between 35 and 40 kilometers within Nuevo León, passing through different points in the metropolitan area before continuing toward Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.
The deputy also maintained that the executive project is still not known in its entirety and said that some procedures related to rights of way appear to be behind schedule.
The statements regarding the lack of progress correspond to Pérez Díaz’s assessment and do not mean that the railway project has been suspended.
Train will travel 396 kilometers between Saltillo and Nuevo Laredo
The project calls for a total route of approximately 396 kilometers between Saltillo, Coahuila, and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, passing through Nuevo León.
According to the information provided, the system is designed to operate at speeds of between 160 and 300 kilometers per hour, with an estimated demand of seven million passengers annually.
One of the sections under consideration runs from Unión San Javier to Arroyo El Sauz, in Lampazos, whose construction was awarded to Constructora ICA for approximately 14 billion pesos.
Overall, the project contemplates an investment of more than 121 billion pesos, including the construction of 30 railway bridges, a viaduct, 15 vehicle crossings, and 146 drainage projects.
They point to uncertainty over construction timelines
The launch of the project was followed from the National Palace by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who has presented the train as one of the projects intended to improve passenger rail connectivity in northern Mexico.
However, Pérez Díaz said that in Nuevo León it is still necessary to specify the construction schedule, alignment, potential impacts, and the works that will be carried out in each municipality.
The legislator said that providing this information will help reduce uncertainty among residents in the areas through which the train will pass and provide greater clarity about when the construction phase will begin in the state.
