Two municipalities account for nearly three out of every four cases of missing and unlocated persons registered in Baja California Sur. Los Cabos and La Paz account for 73% of the cases, and both are among the 100 municipalities in the country with the highest number of records, according to an analysis by Red Lupa.
The study places Los Cabos 58th in the national ranking, with a total of 446 missing and unlocated persons. Of this figure, 390 are men, equivalent to 87%, and 56 are women, representing 13%. The rate recorded for the municipality is 13 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Meanwhile, La Paz ranks 63rd nationally, with 410 cases. Of these, 353 correspond to men, 86%, and 57 to women, 14%. The municipality has a rate of 14 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The territorial distribution of the records shows that the problem of missing persons in Baja California Sur is concentrated primarily in these two municipalities. Together, Los Cabos and La Paz account for 73% of the state’s cases, while Comondú, Mulegé, and Loreto account for the remaining percentage.
Regarding distribution by sex, the analysis indicates that Los Cabos and La Paz are below the national average for missing women considered by Red Lupa. In Los Cabos, women represent 13% of the cases, while in La Paz they account for 14%.
The report also makes it possible to observe the historical evolution of disappearances in BCS. Records begin in 2004 and, starting in 2015, show an increase that continues in subsequent years. 2021 and 2025 stand out among the years with the highest concentration of people who remain missing.
Another piece of data provided by the analysis concerns age. 80% of cases involving missing and unlocated persons are concentrated among people between 20 and 49 years old, while, among missing and unlocated women, 10.17% are between 15 and 44 years old.
At the national level, Red Lupa’s analysis indicates that 56% of disappearance cases are concentrated in 100 municipalities, while 82 of those municipalities are part of metropolitan areas. The study seeks to contribute to an understanding of local disappearance dynamics and provide elements to strengthen prevention, search, and victim assistance responses.
In Baja California Sur, the data identify Los Cabos and La Paz as the main areas where missing and unlocated persons are concentrated, while also placing them among the hundred municipalities with the highest number of cases nationwide.
