The first week of September was the worst period for dengue in Yucatán so far in 2026, as new confirmed cases increased and nearly one hundred people with symptoms of the disease sought medical attention, according to Mexico’s Secretariat of Health (SSA).
After only one case was confirmed during the last week of August, five new cases of dengue were confirmed in Yucatán during week 35 (September 1–7), the highest weekly figure so far in 2026, according to the SSA.
Of the five patients, three have dengue with warning signs (bleeding, abdominal pain, vomiting, and irritability, among others) and two have non-severe dengue, the health authority specified.
So far in 2026, week 35 (W35) is the worst period for dengue in Yucatán, followed by W33 (August 18–24), with four new confirmed cases, and tied for third place are W31 (August 4–10) and W32 (August 11–17), with three cases each, the SSA detailed.
Demand for medical consultations for dengue increases in Yucatán
In addition, during W35, Yucatán reported 91 new probable dengue cases (people with symptoms of the disease who consulted doctors), another indicator that in September demand for health services, such as consultations and laboratory tests, increases due to the disease.
During the four previous weeks, in August, there were 74, 59, 78, and 66 new probable dengue cases in Yucatán.
In other words, while in August, approximately 10, eight, 11, or nine people experiencing dengue-like symptoms went to the doctor each day, during the first week of September, the demand for medical consultations for dengue increased to an average of 13 patients per day.
As of September 7, 2026, the SSA specified that Yucatán had accumulated 1,743 probable dengue cases, an increase of 5.5% compared with the 1,652 cases recorded as of August 31.
Confirmed dengue cases in Yucatán
Yucatán confirmed its first two dengue cases of 2026 during week 2 (January 13–19), both of them non-severe cases.
From then on, the state reported one or two new cases per week, except from W8 (February 24–March 2) through W18 (May 5–11), when the total number of confirmed dengue cases in Yucatán remained “frozen” at nine—six non-severe cases and three with warning signs.
According to SSA figures, the five new dengue cases confirmed during the first week of September are equivalent to one-third of the 16 cases confirmed in July and August 2026, months during which four people also died with dengue symptoms, and were reported as deaths from probable dengue.
Most patients have warning symptoms
As of September 7, 2026, the SSA reported that Yucatán had accumulated 33 confirmed dengue cases: 17 with warning signs, 15 non-severe cases, and one severe case. This represents an increase of 17.8% compared with the 28 cases recorded during W34 (August 25–31).
At least, dengue did not spread to additional municipalities in Yucatán during W35. The 13 municipalities where one or more cases have already been confirmed are Dzilam de Bravo, Cansahcab, Tixméhuac, Sotuta, Mérida, Progreso, Tizimín, Izamal, Peto, Oxkutzcab, Ticul, Valladolid, and Espita.
There are 12 deaths with dengue symptoms in Yucatán
Regarding deaths, the SSA reported that Yucatán remains with no confirmed dengue deaths from January 1 through September 7, 2026.
Regarding the four people who died during the recent summer vacation period, the SSA stated that one person died with dengue symptoms during W27 (July 7–13).
With that death, the number of deaths from probable dengue in Yucatán increased to nine—three were still under investigation, while in six cases it had already been ruled out that the virus was the cause of death.
Then, two people died during W32 (August 4–10), bringing the total to 11 deaths suspected of being related to dengue—five under investigation and six ruled out.
The most recent probable dengue death in Yucatán occurred during W34 (August 25–31). Of the total of 12, six deaths were still under investigation and six had been ruled out.
Now, the SSA reports that during W35, Yucatán remains at 12 probable dengue deaths, but in one of the deceased individuals whose case was under investigation, it was ruled out that the person died from the virus.
Therefore, the number of deaths under investigation decreased from six to five, while deaths in which dengue has already been ruled out increased from six to seven in Yucatán.
