Nayarit’s pescado zarandeado ranked 12th among the world’s best-rated saltwater fish dishes, according to the latest list from TasteAtlas, an international platform specializing in traditional gastronomy. The Nayarit-style dish earned a rating of 4.2 out of 5, placing it ahead of dishes from South Korea, Portugal, and other countries.
The ranking, updated on August 15, compiled 12,174 ratings, of which TasteAtlas recognized 7,606 as legitimate. The site directly associates pescado zarandeado with Nayarit; furthermore, in another ranking updated on September 9, it placed the dish 15th among the best-rated Mexican foods.
The Secretariat of Agriculture traces the origins of pescado zarandeado back to pre-Hispanic times, specifically to the island of Mexcaltitán, Nayarit. Its traditional preparation involves placing the split fish on a grate and cooking it directly over hot coals, turning it during the cooking process.
