Excessive speed caused the overturning of a van carrying 18 Chinese migrants in Chiapas
A cargo van, which was transporting 18 migrants of Chinese origin, suffered an overturn on a highway in Chiapas, an accident that left practically all the foreigners injured, four of them seriously, reported the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
According to the authorities, the events occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday at kilometer 158 of the Mapastepec-Pijijiapan highway section, near the El Carmen community.
According to the first versions, the accident was caused by excessive speed, possibly due to a flat tire due to the load and the lack of caution of the driver, who fled, leaving the migrants injured and to their fate, practically on the asphalt.
The foreigners traveled in the rear, cargo box of the vehicle.
Authorities who arrived to help the injured said that the foreigners did not have documentation to prove their legal stay in Mexico.
The injured were helped by agents of the National Guard and paramedics from the Pijijiapan Civil Protection, who immediately helped four of the 18 injured who were reported serious, so they were transferred to a public hospital, the remaining group suffered blows and lacerations on the body.
Meanwhile, the Istmo-Costa District Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation file for the crime of injuries in a traffic accident, against whoever is responsible.
Traveling crowded inside vans, trailers and buses is one of the most dangerous ways that migrants use to clandestinely cross Mexico, heading to the United States. Clandestine trips for which they pay thousands of dollars to traffickers.
The situation on Mexico’s southern border reflects an “unprecedented” migratory flow in the region, as warned by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), with up to 16,000 migrants arriving at the country’s borders per day, according to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
