Civil Protection authorities in Chiapas confirmed the rescue of two fishermen who had been stranded at sea for five days. They survived after spending the ordeal inside a cooler.
In a brief statement published on its Facebook account, rescue officials identified the fishermen as José Luis Portales Villegas, 35, and Daniel Guerrero Martínez, 54.
Both fishermen were aboard a shrimp-fishing vessel that had been reported missing in Tonalá.
According to Civil Protection, the fishermen were located Wednesday by an aircraft from the Mexican Navy (Semar) approximately 140 nautical miles from Puerto Madero.
Authorities, working in coordination with the Navy, deployed a unit that subsequently transported them to the Twenty-Second Naval Zone, where they received medical attention. Their health was reported as stable.
Images shared by the security agency show the two fishermen inside a blue cooler, where they could apparently only remain standing.
The Navy said it was alerted to the case on August 14, when personnel from a fishing cooperative reported that the fishermen might have gone missing at sea after communication with them was lost.
Local media reported that the vessel may have ventured farther out to sea while fishing for mahi-mahi (“dorado”), a medium-sized fish known for its distinctive blue and yellow coloring. It is also considered a culinary delicacy in Chiapas.
