After more than 10 years, the airline Mexicana de Aviación resumed operations on December 26, with a flight from the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) to the Tulum Airport; although in previous months a list was announced with the main destinations to which the airline would travel – including La Paz and Los Cabos – it is currently not part of it.
With a live broadcast that accompanied his speech during the morning conference, the president of the Republic Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reported on the resumption of operations of this airline in charge of the Railway Airport Group of Auxiliary and Related Services Olmeca-Maya-Mexica, also in charge of managing the Maya Train.
José Gerardo Vega Rivera, General Director of the Olmeca Group explained that, “Initially, the airline will operate from the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) to 14 destinations in the country located in the states of Baja California, Campeche, Chiapas, Guerrero, Jalisco, Nuevo León, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa, Tabasco, Tamaulipas and Yucatán”.
To these destinations in the near future four more will be added: Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas; Uruapan, Michoacán; Huatulco and Ciudad Ixtepec, Oaxaca.
Although months ago, representatives of the tourism and airport sector, at the local level, indicated that there were already talks to finalize this connection with the AIFA, through Mexicana, with this start of operations and according to the information revealed on this day, neither the city of La Paz, nor Los Cabos are part of the list of routes that will be added more closely to the offer of routes.
Operations began with 5 aircraft, although it is planned that from 2024 another 5 aircraft from the Boeing company will be rented. Due to this, it is considered that the lack of aircraft and the multiple delays that occurred for the start of operations by the company, the connection was not achieved.
According to the authorities, it is expected that the airline will have a total of 20 routes, both to some of the most important cities in the country and to tourist spots, with very low costs, they affirm.
At the moment, the only destinations that Mexicana de Aviación has in its “beaches” category are Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlán.
