MEXICO CITY – An armed group kidnapped at least 31 migrants, mostly Venezuelans, when they were traveling last Saturday in a truck in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, bordering the United States, as confirmed this Tuesday by the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“It is known that it is a truck with 30 or 31 migrants who were taken down, they left five, they took the other migrants, but the search is already being done from the first moments,” the president explained in statements to the media after finishing his morning conference in the southern state of Tabasco.
López Obrador said that the Ministry of Public Security and Citizenship of the federal government is investigating the case, but that it is still unknown which group carried out the kidnapping and why.
The Mexican ruler referred to the reports of the national press that indicate that the abduction of the foreigners occurred on Saturday on the Reynosa-Matamoros highway, but the governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal, did not confirm the kidnapping until Monday.
According to the reports, the migrants intercepted are mostly Venezuelans who had left the northern city of Monterrey to Matamoros, bordering Brownsville, Texas, to attend their humanitarian asylum appointment in the United States.
The fact occurs after historical figures were recorded in December of people seeking to enter the United States at the border with Mexico, where the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) confirmed last month the arrival of more than 2.2 million migrants from January to November.
