The mayor of Mérida, Renán Barrera Concha, authorized the installation of natural gas pipelines in the streets of the city, putting at risk the lives of more than a thousand residents of the neighborhoods of San Antonio Cinta, San Antonio Xluch and San José Tecoh.
The residents denounced that the company Gas Natural del Noroeste (GNN) is carrying out the works without the proper permits and without informing them of the risks involved in having a gas pipeline under their homes.
They also accused the municipal authorities of being accomplices of the company, since they have not responded to their complaints and have allowed the works to continue despite the irregularities.
The residents demanded the immediate suspension of the works and the cancellation of the project, which they consider a threat to their safety and the environment. They also announced that they will file legal actions against the company and the municipality for violating their human rights.
