Mazatlán, key terminal for import and export of vehicles: activity grows by 1,174 %

In the maritime terminal of the National Port System Administration in Mazatlán (Asipona), the import and export of vehicles increased by 1,174 percent, making it a key area for this sector in the state.

Martín Ochoa López, secretary of Economic Development, Tourism and Fisheries (Sedectur), reported that only in 2023, according to figures from Asipona in Mazatlán, the accumulated traffic of automobiles is 166,304 units, of which 152,804 are imported and 13,500 exported.

He stressed that the growth in this area contributes to the generation of jobs, as well as the rental of spaces for the custody of automobiles, which is mainly visible in the south exit of the city, thus achieving a positive impact on the Gross Domestic Product of the municipality.

“Many vehicles are being imported, it has been growing since 2022, companies like Chirey, Nissan, MG and several companies are choosing our port, previously they did it through Lázaro Cárdenas and Manzanillo, but Mazatlán is also reputed in the industrial field, of imports. This is a gateway to the world, in this case, from Asia. They enter through Mazatlán and from here they go to their destination,” he said.

He specified that with these figures it is evident the transition in its activity that the port has experienced, going from mainly mobilizing raw material for more than a decade, to becoming a key terminal for the import and export of vehicles, which mostly come from the Asian continent.

Ochoa López said that currently brands such as Saic Motors, Nissan, Chirey, General Motors Changan, Ford and even Tesla, are some of the ones that have requested to move their vehicles through the Mazatlán terminal and it is expected that they will remain choosing the municipality for their operation.
