In a bid to regulate the use of electric scooters on the city’s bike paths, authorities have seized 21 units in a crackdown on unlicensed operators. The Mayor’s Office, backed by the National Guard and Municipal Civil Protection personnel, conducted a search operation on Wednesday night in the Del Mar Avenue boardwalk and Mazatlán’s tourist area.
The move comes after a meeting between rental owners and municipal authorities, where they were given a deadline to comply with regulations and commitments made. However, inspectors found that 21 scooters did not meet the necessary requirements, including permits and safety equipment.
As a result, the scooters were detained and taken into safekeeping at municipal offices, where their owners can file a complaint and comply with the law. The initiative to regulate electric scooter use on bike paths was sparked by an accident involving a Spanish skateboarder who nearly lost an eye on June 4.
The woman’s public complaint on social media highlighted the need for authorities to take action against rental operators and ensure compliance with regulations, including helmet and safety gear requirements. Authorities have pledged to “bring rental owners to heel” and enforce new rules that limit scooter users to one driver per vehicle, set a speed limit of 25 kilometers per hour, and require the use of helmets, knee pads, and elbow pads.
