Canada-Mexico travel soared in 2023, a huge increase from the previous year.
This trend is continuing; more than 118 million air travelers flew to Mexico last year.
FarHomes, a site that helps people find international properties, gathered some data on how many Canadians visited Mexico in 2023.
Travelers from various countries went to Mexico in large numbers, but Canadians especially seemed to dominate the travel as “the second biggest tourist group in Mexico last year.”
“Domestic flights rose by 11.5 per cent year over year, which is a remarkable 65 per cent jump vs 2019 while international flights increased by 10 per cent vs 2022 and 13.1 per cent vs pre-pandemic. Canadian tourism, specifically, spiked to over 4 million visitors per year to Mexico.”
FarHomes adds, “Flights between the US and Mexico grew by 4.4 per cent [year-over-year]. But one major highlight was a 59.5 per cent boost in Canadian passengers flying to Mexico in 2023 vs 2022.”

What draws so many Canadians to Mexico?
While these travel figures don’t necessarily imply anything other than that Canadians like going to Mexico, based on other data from FarHomes, it’s not unreasonable to assume that some of these travelers may be looking for a new place to live.
According to FarHomes, Canadians have been moving to Mexico more than ever, at about 4x per year since 2020. Many of them are even opting to become permanent residents.
Not everyone is pleased about the influx of Canadians.
According to Zisla, a Mexican housing platform, the average home price is sadly low compared to Canadian prices, depending on which part of Canada you’re from.
“A two-bedroom house in Mexico City can range from $100,000 to $500,000, while a similar property in Tulum may cost more than $1 million. In Cancun, a two-bedroom home can range from $200,000 to $1,100,000, depending on the location and amenities. In the quiet, beachside town of Chelem, prices for a two-bedroom house can range from $50,000 to $300,000.”
