La Laguna is one of the most recognized metropolitan areas in the country, which is made up of some cities from the neighboring states of Durango and Coahuila.
Both territories have worked together for several years, but on this occasion, we will talk about the origin and history behind the name they have received.
COAHUILA DE ZARAGOZA
Located in the northwest of the country, sharing a border with Texas and divided into thirty-eight municipalities, Coahuila is one of the four largest states in Mexico, with an area of 151,571 km².
According to its etymology, the name of “Coahuila” comes from the Nahuatl “coatl” and “huilana”, which mean “Flying Snake”, “Place Where Snakes Crawl” and “Place of Many Trees”.
While the name of “Zaragoza” refers to the Mexican military man Ignacio Zaragoza, who is recognized as the hero of the Battle of Puebla.
DURANGO
Like Coahuila, Durango is also one of the largest states in the country, with a total of 123,364 km². It is divided into 39 municipalities.
The title of ‘Durango’ honors the city of Durango (Vizcaya) in Spain, it was named so thanks to the fact that it is the birthplace of Francisco de Ibarra, one of the first Spaniards to arrive in the area.
On the other hand, the word is of Basque origin and can be translated as “meadow between heights”, “extensive meadow”, “bracken”, “place of ferns” or “beyond the water”.
