The Independent Union “3 de Marzo” workers of the Oaxaca de Juárez City Council have initiated a work stoppage as a pressure measure to demand a favorable response to their list of demands. This comes after the failure of initial negotiations with municipal authorities.

The workers’ main demand is a 100% salary increase. The union consists of just over a thousand people, and additionally, there are substitute personnel for base workers, totaling around 1,500 individuals.

According to union leaders, two-thirds of the workers (at least 750) do not earn the current minimum wage in the country.

The protests by the “3 de marzo” Union began on May 21 when they marched to the municipal palace located in the Historic Center of the state capital.

As a result of the work stoppage, which is expected to last three days, services such as garbage collection, cleaning of parks and gardens, and various municipal offices are suspended.

The union’s decision is already evident, especially in the streets of the city center, where accumulated urban solid waste can be seen, primarily generated by businesses, restaurants, and other commercial establishments.
