Another CJNG cell is dismantled in Zacatecas; there are detainees from five different states

State and federal security forces participated in the operation

A little over a week after five men who claimed to be members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) were arrested in Zacatecas, state and federal authorities dismantled another cell that was allegedly linked to the same criminal group.

As a result of intelligence work and field work by the Zacatecas Immediate Reaction Forces (FRIZ), the Mexican Army and the National Guard, five individuals who were considered generators of violence in the region were arrested.

According to the official report, security personnel were patrolling the community of El Tanque, in the municipality of Pinos, when they observed the now detained men in a Chevrolet Blazer truck.

The driver of said vehicle, upon noticing the presence of the uniformed officers, accelerated with the intention of evading the authorities, but was unable to escape.

A few meters from the place where the sighting occurred, police and military agents arrested José Leonardo “N”, 18 years old and originally from Veracruz; Abelardo “N” 29 years old, originally from Tabasco; Pablo “N” 33 years old, from Jalisco; Jony “N” 27 years old, originally from Zacatecas; and a minor, whose identity was kept confidential, from Baja California Sur.

The apparent members of the criminal gang were seized with four long firearms, four ballistic vests, cartridges, magazines, 48 doses of possible crystal (methamphetamine) and the Chevrolet Blazer truck that they used to move around, which has been reported stolen.

According to data from intelligence work led by the Security Forces, these people are considered generators of violence in the southeastern part of the state, which includes the municipalities of Cuauhtémoc, General Pánfilo Natera, Loreto, Luis Moya, Noria de Ángeles, Ojocaliente, Pinos, Villa García, Villa González Ortega and Villa Hidalgo.

This area borders the states of Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosí and the municipality of Ojuelos de Jalisco, located in the Los Altos region, considered a disputed territory between the Sinaloa Cartel and the CJNG.

Both criminal groups have been in direct confrontation since at least the end of 2020, when the CDS faction led by Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada responded to the threats of the four-letter cartel with the deployment of armed commandos operating under the name ‘Operativa MZ’.

The main purpose of this group, in their own words, is to stop the advance that the CJNG intended to make towards the states of Nayarit and Zacatecas.

As of this publication, the state authorities have not provided further information regarding the acts of violence with which the recently dismantled cell could be involved. However, the operation allowed us to observe again the participation of hitmen from different territories who operate for the CJNG in Zacatecas. Among those arrested on May 21 there was a subject from Colombia and another from Ecuador, as well as one from Nayarit and another from Veracruz.
