The June 2 elections generated all kinds of situations, from unregistered candidates elected, to participants without votes

In Rayón, a small municipality located 110 kilometers from Hermosillo, Sonora, an unusual election took place. An independent candidate without registration named Heriberto Grijalva Vázquez won the local elections on June 2 with 711 votes.
However, everything indicates that the mayor’s office could be awarded to the representative of the PRI-PAN-PRD coalition, Alejandro Luis Grijalva Robles.
Heriberto Grijalva Vázquez, who had already been mayor of Rayón between 2006 and 2009 for the PAN, managed to convince his neighbors to write his name in the box for unregistered candidates.
Thus, with 50.27 percent of citizen participation, the results were clear: 711 votes in favor of Grijalva Vázquez, surpassing the official candidate of the PRI-PAN-PRD coalition by 37 votes.
According to data from the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP), in section 649, Heriberto obtained 198 votes, while in section 650 he swept with 513. These results surpassed the registered candidates of Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), Morena, the Partido Sonorense (PS) and the PRI-PAN-PRD coalition, who together obtained 700 votes.
They refuse to recognize the victory of an unregistered candidate in Sonora
Despite the victory at the polls, local media reports that Heriberto Grijalva Vázquez may not receive his appointment. On Monday, June 3, accompanied by supporters, he peacefully demonstrated in front of the local electoral body to demand that his victory be respected.
“Here we are with the people who supported us, demonstrating peacefully. I repeat it again, demanding that our victory be recognized and that the will of the people be respected and that the certificate of majority and validity not be given to those who did not obtain the majority of votes,” he declared.
Grijalva Vázquez explained that he tried to register as a candidate for Movimiento Ciudadano, but his candidacy was not accepted and he was not informed. Despite this, he continued his campaign as an unregistered independent candidate, where he won the support of citizens.
The National Electoral Institute (INE) allows voters to write the name of an unregistered candidate on the ballots. However, the case of Heriberto Grijalva Vázquez must be reviewed by the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF), which has the authority to annul the election or appointment if it deems it necessary.
