The State Government, through the Trust for the Promotion of Handicraft Activities of the State of Chihuahua (Fodarch), held the awards ceremony for the 32nd Regional Popular Art Competition of the Sierra Tarahumara “Guachochi 2026,” at the Andrés Balleza Carreón Cultural Center.
For the fifth time, Guachochi hosted this event, which recognized the talent and creativity of artisans from the mountainous region.
This edition featured pieces in 11 categories and 23 subcategories, including plant fibers, musical instruments, traditional clothing, textiles, pottery, wood, leather, jewelry, toys, stonework, and quarrying.
The call for entries included traditional techniques and materials, as well as new proposals.
During the ceremony, 70 prizes were awarded, with a total prize fund of 375,000 pesos: 23 first-place prizes of 6,500 pesos, 23 second-place prizes of 5,000 pesos, 23 third-place prizes of 4,000 pesos, as well as an Excellence Award of 18,500 pesos for the best piece in the exhibition.
The funds were contributed equally by the National Fund for the Promotion of Handicrafts (Fonart) and Fodarch.
State and municipal authorities, community representatives, members of various government agencies, and representatives of the Tarahumara Diocese attended the event, along with Fodarch Director Nayeli Ontiveros Velo.
In addition to recognizing the quality of the participating pieces, the competition contributes to preserving traditional techniques and artisanal knowledge, strengthening their promotion, and bringing creations from the Sierra Tarahumara to new audiences.
The event concluded with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the exhibition of the participating pieces, where the public will be able to appreciate the diversity of popular art from the region, contributing to its recognition, promotion, and development.
