Former US President Donald Trump accused his successor, Joe Biden, of “completely handing over” control of the border with Mexico and said that the decree announced on Monday, which limits, for example, asylum applications, “will worsen the immigration invasion.”
“His weakness and extremism has caused an invasion at the border like we’ve never seen before,” Trump said in a video posted on social media hours after an executive order was announced with which Biden seeks to expressly penalize those who enter the United States illegally.
For Trump, Biden is simply “pretending that he is finally doing something,” but “it’s all for show,” according to the tycoon because the first televised debate is approaching.
Both will face each other again at the polls in November, re-enacting the face-to-face that they already fought in 2020 and that ended in favor of the Democrat.
Trump believes that, despite the measures announced by Biden, “millions” of people will continue trying to reach the United States, since “other countries have emptied their prisons and psychiatric hospitals and have sent drug traffickers, human traffickers and terrorists.”
In this sense, he alleged that “closing the border” will be “the main priority” of his hypothetical second term, from “day one.” He has recovered his promise to erect a wall on the border with Mexico and, in addition, aspires to “return home” all “illegal immigrants.”
Trump’s message contrasts, however, with that of the UN, which fears the effects that the measures announced by Biden may generate for fundamental rights and freedoms. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has expressed its “deep” concerns in a statement, calling for “reconsidering restrictions that undermine the fundamental right (of people) to seek asylum.”
