MAZATLÁN._ A total of 27 dogs that were completely abandoned, neglected, malnourished and cruel to animals were rescued from a house in Colonia Centro de Mazatlán.

“There are many issues like the case this morning, which was historic and honestly of great importance, because there is a seizure of more than 27 dogs there in Colonia Centro. Why this had not been attended to before, honestly before us, I mean a year and seven months ago, I don’t know why it had not been done,” he said.

According to the statement, this complaint had been filed years ago by some citizens, however, no administration had acted. Giving value to animal welfare and after an arduous legal process, personnel from the Directorate of Ecology and Environment, together with the Canine Unit, and Civil Protection seized these animals, which were located in a house in Colonia Centro de Mazatlán.

“Neighbors say that the problem has been going on for more than 11 years, some neighbors say it has been going on for more than eight years. Honestly, as the Director of Ecology, I was not aware of this, only rumors. We had not been charged with the crime, but since we were charged, we have not rested until we have conducted all the relevant investigations to be able to provide them with timely attention,” she said.

The situation of the 27 dogs is deplorable, as they were without food, without medical treatment, or basic care, and in a completely contaminated environment.

Regarding this, the Director of Ecology, Eunice Murúa Figueroa, stated that, although the rescue was a resounding success, due to all the work done and the effort of the authorities, the situation is regrettable.

She thanked the support of the rescuers who joined to make it possible and stated that the Municipal Government is acting with everything humanly possible for the welfare of the animals.

“We would never have been able to handle this case without the support of independent rescuers and animal protection societies here in Mazatlán. Thanks to them we were able to secure the animals and thanks to them the dogs are safe and sound,” he acknowledged.

“We are going to provide them with veterinary medical services, we are also going to provide them with food, everything they need. We need the support of the public to be able to get this done.”

The complaint against whoever is responsible has already been filed with the Prosecutor’s Office, who were present during the rescue, as well as Public Security and Municipal Civil Protection, due to the conditions of mistreatment, abandonment and unhealthiness, not only for the animals, but for the neighbors in the surrounding area.

“We cannot carry out an attack in a home without a search warrant, so we had to put together a strategy together with the Attorney General’s Office, with Public Security, with Civil Protection to be able to deal with it as it should be, just as we put together the entire operation to inform various agencies, and that is how we were able to deal with it,” he explained.

Murúa Figueroa called on citizens to be aware and to be socially and humanly responsible, not only through reporting, but also through the support of the authorities to continue acting, and he also asked Mazatlan families to support them in adopting, since the city’s shelters are saturated.

“We call on citizens to be aware that animals are sentient beings that need the same care that any member of our family needs, to be responsible reporters, that is, I report and I see how we can support them, this securing of these 27 dogs in critical conditions would never have been achieved without the support of independent rescuers who have supported us with temporary shelter for them,” he mentioned.

“As a Municipal Government headed by our Mayor Edgar Gonzalez and through the Department of Ecology, we are acting every day and 24 hours a day and we will not stop until all these people who are committing crimes of mistreatment, abandonment and animal cruelty end up in jail or end up with such heavy fines that they never have animals again,” he concluded.

Anyone interested in supporting one of the 27 rescued ‘puppies’ or in the best of cases adopting, can go to the offices of the Department of Ecology and Environment.
