A family of tourists from the United States, who were traveling along the Sonoyta-Caborca highway, were victims of an armed attack by alleged criminals, as confirmed by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGJE) of Sonora.

It was shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 1, when security agents received a report of an assault with a firearm on the highway, at kilometer 165, which left a 28-year-old woman injured, so she was transferred to receive medical attention at a hospital in Caborca.

The victim told the agents that subjects on the highway asked her to stop her vehicle, in which she was traveling with her husband and children, however, when she refused, the men began a chase and shot at the car, which ended up crashing.

Red Cross paramedics were dispatched to the site to assist the victims, but no serious or life-threatening injuries were reported.

State Security Forces also went to the scene to assist those affected; in addition, a search operation is being maintained in the region to locate and capture those responsible, in order to bring them to the attention of the corresponding authority.

The Sonora Prosecutor’s Office explained that they are working in coordination with members of the State Security Board, as well as with personnel from the three levels of government, to carry out the corresponding investigations and clarify the incident.

It should be noted that, according to data from the Sonora Security Observatory, the northern region of the state, including the Altar Desert, has seen a considerable increase in acts of violence so far this year.

In the municipality of Caborca alone, which has a population of around 67 thousand inhabitants, the increase in murders has been 68.42%.

Recently, the representative of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), Francisco Sergio Méndez, reported that the municipality is disputed by four criminal groups that seek to take over the “plaza.”

This has caused multiple armed confrontations in the region, as well as the presence of armed people and armored or modified cars by organized crime, especially on the roads and highways of the area.
