Sólo dos presas de Guanajuato se han logrado ‘recuperar’ durante el periodo de lluvias

Although the rain has increased in some corners of the state of Guanajuato, its dams still show no signs of recovery.

According to the National Water Information System through the Monitoring of the Main Dams of Mexico, and which is recorded daily by the National Water Commission, of the 9 dams considered in the state of Guanajuato, only two of them have managed to increase their percentage of filling in the last month.

Through a cut made by Correo, it was possible to corroborate that La Begoña, a dam located in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende, went from being 18 percent of its capacity to 21 percent. In its case, the capacity reached is up to 125 million cubic meters of water.

Another dam that can confirm a ‘slight’ recovery is La Golondrina, in the municipality of Pénjamo, which went from being at 12 percent of its capacity to increasing to 15 percent. However, this dam is one of the smallest reported by CONAGUA, since it barely reaches 4.6 million cubic meters at its maximum capacity.

The remaining dams, including the Solís Dam or the Yuriria Lagoon, as those with the largest capacity in the state of Guanajuato, have not managed to recover after the current rains, and have even decreased their level reported to the federal government agency.

Rainy season impacts Guanajuato

However, CONAGUA itself, but through its monitoring of rainy periods and temperatures in the states, recorded up to 126.3 millimeters of rain in the state of Guanajuato, which means the most ‘prolific’ period of this 2024.

Previously, the greatest amount of rain that had been considered in the entity occurred during the month of February, when 14.6 millimeters were reached. In this way, Guanajuato already has 153.1 millimeters of rain in the first six months of the year, although the series of precipitations is forecast due to the natural phenomena that occur in the country and its borders.

Rains do not support dams in Apaseo el Alto

The rains have not yet been significant for the reservoirs of Apaseo el Alto, although there are 10 dams with a small storage capacity in this municipality registered by the National Water Commission.

Almost all of these dams are interconnected with each other in such a way that the highest dam pours liquid downstream and fills the others. According to Civil Protection data, there has not been any change so far after the hot and dry season, none of the dams have collected water and are dry.

Among these we can name the Belén dam with a capacity to store 40 thousand cubic meters, Gamboa or La China can store up to 600 thousand cubic meters, Espejo or Mandujano, the largest in the municipality, can store 10 million cubic meters, Gamboa dam is broken but could store 250 thousand cubic meters, Paredones or Cabero can store 170 thousand cubic meters, La Presita de San Cristóbal, the last one downstream can store 800 thousand cubic meters, San Marcial dam 850 thousand cubic meters, Barajas 1 million 350 thousand cubic meters and El Sabino 200 thousand cubic meters.

Together they would add up to 15 million cubic meters of storage that serve for agricultural irrigation and watering, this is the case of the Barajas dam, the only one that has only a little water for animals, however there is optimism that with the rains of this season they can be filled again.
