Respiratory diseases attack Mexico: 16 hospitals report 50 percent or more occupancy

Is COVID returning to Mexico? So far this year, 375 deaths from the virus have been reported in the country, and in recent weeks the trend in the number of infections is higher than in recent months, according to data from the Ministry of Health.

In its report on Wednesday, July 10, it said that 8,075 cases of COVID have been confirmed so far this year, 429 more than last week.

The weekly reports on the incidence of COVID showed a trend of less than 200 infections in the country per week; however, this week the number doubled.

It should be noted that the most recent data from the Information System of the IRAG Network, directed by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Ministry of Health itself, indicate that there are 16 hospitals with more than 50 percent occupancy of patients with respiratory diseases, mainly due to COVID and influenza.

According to the IRAG Network, the 16 hospitals that report 50 percent or more occupancy for patients with respiratory problems, which could be COVID, influenza or other diseases, are:

Flu and influenza cases are on the rise in Mexico

According to the Ministry of Health, 646 infections have been reported in the current interseasonal influenza season, as well as 11 deaths resulting from complications.

In addition, 1,328,194 cases of Acute Respiratory Infection have been reported, as well as 10,364 cases of pneumonia or bronchopneumonia.

The worst moment of COVID in Mexico this year?

The Ministry of Health reported that the preliminary positivity curve is at its highest point so far this year, with a 28 percent chance that people with symptoms will test positive for COVID. This is the highest level so far this year, including the cold season in January and February.

These data appear more than a year after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the end of the COVID emergency. There are currently 98,370 suspected cases of the virus in Mexico.

375 people have died from COVID so far this year, a figure lower than the 1,947 deaths reported throughout last year.

Which are the states with the most cases and deaths from COVID?

So far this year, Mexico City has been the entity most affected by COVID, since it concentrates 25.8 percent of infections and 15.5 percent of deaths due to the virus.

The states with the most COVID infections are:

Mexico City: 2,086 infections.
Querétaro: 701 infections.
State of Mexico: 683 infections.
Nuevo León: 509 infections.
Puebla: 373 infections.

The entities with the most deaths from COVID so far this year are:

Mexico City: 58 deaths.
Puebla: 33 deaths.
Jalisco: 23 deaths.
State of Mexico: 25 deaths.
Hidalgo: 22 deaths.
